Commish's Thoughts

I will use this page to share some thoughts on the 2009 RRC. As we get closer, I will make sure I update this page with thoughts regarding dates, times, etc. for the event. As always, your feedback is appreciated, but I would like to get feedback long before the day before the event!!

1.  24+ or Bust – We have yet to top the 24 player mark for an event and this is a surprise to most participants. We typically get at least 30+ guys to commit a month in advance, but phantom sump pump leaks and oddly timed family vacations jump up and take guys away from us. Based on the positive feedback from previous participants, it is odd we can’t get more guys to play. I am hoping this year we set a new record.

2.  Is Mac hiding something? – Mac has been a colorful addition to the RRC and he generally starts the smack talk early and often. But there have been some whispers that Mac’s smack talk is really a smoke screen for some type of deficiency. Only time will tell, but you have to wonder about a guy that questions the swing of a career .400 hitter!

3.  Can Bearcat beat Schuster in consecutive years? – Schuster’s dominance over Bear in recent Friday matches (and all other matches for that matter) has become legendary. But in 2008, Bearcat stepped up and beat Schuster 2&1 to take bragging rights. While Schuster still holds a commanding 10-2-4 career record against Bearcat, the pressure is on Schuster to retake the title. It is important to note that Schuster has started a college fund for orphans with all of the winnings he has taken from Bear.

4.  Will Gockel continue to dominate Hawk? – The two RRC studs have produced some majestic matches in recent years, but lately Gockel has put his foot down and taken Hawk to the woodshed. Recent failures by Hawk to put points on the board for his team have led Hawk to start a new work out regime in anticipation of 2009 RRC rematch. In Hawk’s own words, “Dude, I will dominate.”

5.  Where will we play in 2009? – I have actually considered playing at ISU and Ironweed this year, but it is hard to beat the prices at PV and Den. When you consider they are beautiful 4-star courses, and #18 at PV is a great finishing hole, it has hard to play anywhere else.

6.  Who are the captains for 2009? – I have thought long and hard about this and I have not made up my mind. In past years, you had to play in at least 2 RRC events before you were selected as a captain. But with the addition of some new blood last year, as well as some last minute drop outs, the decision is still up in the air. As we all know, the captains’ selection is CRITICAL as they play a huge role on draft night. Rumors coming out or RRC headquarters suggest that Chappy and Mac may be selected but there are some concerns regarding those picks (see #2).

FAQ

Who can play in the event?

Anyone who has a connection to ISU Baseball.  Friends, family, teammates, administrators, faculty, etc. are all welcome to play.

I suck. . .can I still play?

The great thing about the RRC is that we draft players the night before the event based on handicaps.  If you don't have a handicap, don't worry because we will make sure that you are evenly paired with someone of equal talent.  We have players that shoot in the 100's and we have players that are single digit handicappers.  As long as you are honest about your golfing ability, you will have a great time.

I don't want to play with some guys I don't know. . .

While the captains work hard to put together fair pairings, they work even harder to make sure that everyone will play at least 18 holes with someone they know.  Some of the best pairings have been with guys who hardly know each other but end up dominating on the course.  Don't forget, we are all Redbirds at heart!

Who is the best player?

Hard to say. . .we have not done a great job keeping individual records (will do a better job in future years), but the best player doesn't necessarily produce the most points.  But if I was pressed to pick a player that has a unique knack of winning matches that he has no business winning then that would be 69 year old Bob Schuster (just ask Schroeder).

What do we do if it rains?

Simple. . .get the cards out and play 3-5-7!!
